Author info: Alfred P. Gibbs (1890-1967) was a man born to preach. Brought up with his twin brother Edwin in South Africa, both boys early came to know, love, and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Edwin (1890-1968) stayed on in South Africa to pursue a fruitful evangelistic and Bible teaching work. Alfred studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and thereafter carried on an itinerant Bible teaching and writing ministry, chiefly in the United States and Canada. Gibbs published his first book,The Marvelous City of Mansoul in 1926. In all he wrote fourteen books and booklets, including Christian Baptism, The Lord’s Supper, Scriptural Principles of Gathering, and Worship. All his books have intensity like the man who wrote them. He was full of his subject. He also composed poetry and wrote Christian hymns. Gibbs never married, considering himself a eunuch for the kingdom of God. He was a model of the advice he gave, he was a spiritual man and a practical man, and fun to be with besides. For Gibbs, to hold forth the Word of life was a lifetime passion.

Here's What People Are Saying!

"By far the most thorough treatise on baptism since Johannes Warns' exhaustive study, the book begins by describing the different baptisms of the New testament. After dealing at length with the meaning of and the authority for baptism, and the persons eligible for baptism, and the mode of baptism, the author devoted more than 100 pages to considering the differing views on baptism. These include the views of those who believe in infant baptism, of The Reformation, of Roman Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Lutherans, Episcopalians, of those who ignore the necessity for baptism, as the Quakers and the Salvation Army, and of those who oppose all forms of baptism. Then he goes on to deal with those who teach and practice baptism on behalf of the dead, those who teach and practice household baptism, and various other views and practices concerning baptism.

There follows treatment of the spiritual significance, questions asked in the New Testament on baptism, what baptism is not, the baptism formula, hindrances to baptism, the message of baptism, and—helpfully—five baptismal hymns.

This book along with two companion books from the same author, Worship—The Christian's Highest Occupation, and The Lord's Supper might well be studied by all who serve as elders or aspire to such service. In fact they are valuable reading for all Christians.

In all his years of prolific production of Christian literature, Alfred P. Gibbs probably has done the church no greater service than to put into its hands this scholarly exposition of baptism.A Pastoral Gem.
