The Suffering Servant of the Lord: A Prophecy of Jesus Christ is a major new study of the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah. It is exegetical, expositional, devotional, and Christological.

  • It is exegetical in that it is based on a careful study of the text.
  • It explains the meaning of the chapter to both its original and modern readers. The book will give preachers and teachers help in outlining and illustrating their sermons and lectures.
  • It is devotional in that this marvelous chapter addresses the deepest need of people, the need for forgiveness of sin and peace with God.
  • It is Christological in that it focuses on the person of Jesus Christ. MacLeod writes, “I have finished this work more convinced than ever that the passage is a straightforward prophecy of Jesus Christ written by the prophet Isaiah some seven hundred years before the birth of the Savior.”

David MacLeod was born in Sydney on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. At the age of eleven he moved with his family to Massachusetts. Five years later he was converted to faith in Jesus Christ. After graduating from Worcester State University (B.S.Ed. [1965]), he received his theological education at Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M. [1969], Ph.D. [1987]). He has taught at Western Bible College (now Colorado Christian University) and Dallas Theological Seminary. Since 1983 he has taught at Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he presently serves as Professor of Bible and Theology. At Emmaus he also served as Associate Editor of The Emmaus Journal, a semiannual journal of biblical and theological studies. He frequently ministers the Word at his home church where he served for a number of years as an elder. Commended to the work of the Lord by Brethren assemblies in Colorado, he has a weekend preaching ministry—primarily in the Midwest. In addition to articles in The Emmaus Journal, he has written for Journey Magazine and Bibliotheca Sacra. He also wrote The Letter to the Hebrews for Emmaus Correspondence School and The Seven Last Things for ECS Ministries. David and his wife Linda have four adult children.

Here's What People Are Saying!

“I have had the privilege of serving the Lord alongside Dr. MacLeod for over fifty years—since our student days at Dallas Theological Seminary. Over the years I have greatly appreciated a particular characteristic that is evident in all of his writings—he is both a preacher-scholar and a scholar-preacher.

Isaiah was the gospel writer in the OT. His presentation of the person and work of the coming Messiah reaches a height found in no other writer before the apostles themselves. Indeed, many reading Isaiah 53 for the first time think they are reading a passage from one of the NT evangelists. I commend to you this fine work by Dr. David MacLeod. The literature on this portion of Scripture is immense. I think you will find that this study by David MacLeod ranks among the finest.”
